Supplements Grand Junction

Every person’s diet and lifestyle are different. As are their nutritional needs and health goals. Some patients come in as athletes, whose supplemental needs could be very different than people who are focusing on sustaining energy levels during the middle of the day. Some people sleep more, some sleep less. Some eat more calories, some are putting on muscle, some are taking off weight.

Everyone's Nutritional Needs Are Different

The point is, every person is different, and has different health needs. Supplements can be great for helping with those needs. We often find that people looking for supplements simply have trouble getting that nutritional need met through their daily diet. The typical American diet is very unhealthy and counterproductive for virtually any kind of sustainable health. However, many of our patients are already health-conscious, yet still have health challenges of some kind or another.

Poor Nutrition Is The Root Problem Of Virtually Everything

What we typically find is that diet and nutrition are at the root of virtually every health-related challenge or problem, for most people. That may sound surprising to you, if you’re reading this, especially because Western medicine typically asserts the opposite. The traditionally held belief, in Western society today, is that if the body is having some problem, it’s because there’s something defective with the body that needs to be fixed. Like a car with an oil leak, the doctor must approach the body as something that’s broken, which only medicine can remedy.

Western Medicine Cannot "Cure" The Problem

The problem with this Western model of health, which is a glaring and obvious fault, easily recognizable, is that medicine does not cure illness. It only lessens symptoms. The way to discern this is that most people who are prescribed medication for a chronic illness or problem never seem to get off the medication. If Western medicine could “cure” or “fix” people the way an auto mechanic can fix a broken car, then medicine would only ever be a temporary prescription. What we often see, however, is that once people get on a medication, they could very well be on it for life. And not only that, but people taking multiple daily medications often are forced into taken secondary medications simply to offset the side effects of the first set of medications.

Clearly, medications do not cure people.

But if Western medicine does not “cure” people of illness and disease, then what does?

Only The Body Can Cure The Body

We believe (with literal mountains of supporting evidence and scientific data) that only the body is capable of curing the body. Organic matter holds the key through genes to replicating healthy cells, to create entire bodies. The body’s immune system is always functioning, capable of removing foreign entities, and fighting off invasive organisms. If the body is cut, the body heals the cut. If the body is tired, the body restores itself with rest.

Human bodies don’t have every resource available, intrinsically (that is, within itself), to cure all problems. But given the right resources, it can.

Give The Body The Resources It Needs To Heal Itself

So, what are the right resources for healing, you ask? Doesn’t it make sense that nutrition – things the body takes into itself, converts into energy and organic building blocks, and distributes through the bloodstream – would contain the essential ingredients for fueling the body?

Can you imagine giving a dog drinks of highly sugared, highly acidic water? What about feeding it chocolate, which is a known toxin for dogs? What if we take it to the extreme and give an animal drinks of water that contains car oil?

The point is that with bad input, the body gets bad results. Drinking car oil, for a human (or any living creature) is the same as drinking a known poison. Clearly, what we put into our bodies does matter. Not all foods and drinks are created equally. Of course, no one doubts that drinking car oil is unhealthy.

Toxins In The Foods We Eat

But then why is there so much debate around known toxins that Americans typically ingest (eat or drink) every day? Soda, candy, boxes of snack foods you could find at any grocery store, processed sugar... the list is endless. Look at the nutritional facts of any boxed item you might purchase at a grocery store. If there are items on the ingredients list you don’t understand or can’t pronounce, you can bet it’s probably at least minorly toxic for the body in some way.

And if the ingredient is a minor toxin, is that really so much better for you than a major toxin, like car oil or poison?

Most Medications Are Immunosuppressants

Many medications fall under the same category. All Western medicine drugs are immunosuppressants, meaning that they suppress (or weaken) your immune system. “Symptoms” of any illness or disease are actually the body’s way of telling you that something is very wrong in the body and needs to change. Remember that medicine alleviates symptoms but does not “cure” diseases or illnesses. Meaning that drugs attack the very immune system that is attempting to treat the illness. Because Western medicine drugs are immunosuppressants, we would consider them to likewise be toxic for the body. Just consider that all drugs have side effects, and you’ll have a good idea of why we call them toxic. The side effects are caused by toxins.

Of course, there are also complexities to the body, and drugs certainly have their place in some extreme cases. Sometimes the body needs time to heal itself, and drugs can be useful during that time.

Optimal Nutrition Is Different For Everyone

So, back to proper nutrition. When you visit our office, Dr. Adam will take time with you to discuss what proper nutrition looks like for you. We do not buy into the popular notion that there is one diet that fits all. Obviously, there are many blood types, many places we all come from, and many health goals. We will help you pick foods that work for your specific body and lifestyle. We may also help you determine if you have any unknown allergies (through a very easy and non-invasive approach called NAET) that may be throwing off your body’s normal functioning.

Supplements are great. Especially in today’s world where getting adequate nutrients of specific types can be difficult (fruits and vegetables are known to have only a fraction of the nutrients of similar fruits and vegetables 50 years ago – due to poor farming practices, chemicals, etc.). We also recommend that if a person can get adequate nutrition directly from the food they eat, that they start there.

Nutrition And Bioavailability

There is a component of nutrition called “bioavailability” which represents the percentage of a food or supplement that the body can actually convert and use. Then there is the fact that certain amino acids and micronutrients either activate best the in presence of other nutrients or can’t be absorbed at all without them. Vitamin D, for example, is most bioavailable in the presence of fat. Foods are therefore the best source of nutrients because they come prepackaged in a holistic cocktail that the body can most readily use.

Supplement To Optimize Your Nutritional Intake

Supplements are perfect when a person either can’t get enough of a certain nutrient through their diet alone or struggles to eat certain types of food that typically contain that nutrient. Given the typical American diet (and even many specialized diets that we see many health-conscious people visit us with), for example, we often find that most people are deficient for magnesium, which is one of the most calming nutrients for the body there is. It also is a common deficiency in people because of our high-stress culture.

Our whole goal at Modern Acupuncture Grand Junction is to give your body the building blocks it needs to heal itself and stay healthy. Supplements do not cure people. But proper nutrition through food and supplements do give the body the resources it needs to cure itself.

Call our office today to learn more about nutrition and the best nutritional plan for you. We may recommend some supplements, which you can either pick up at our office, or purchase elsewhere. We believe that giving your body the proper resources is key to your optimal health and wellness.
